Esternal Advisor Critique Insights

  • Last form that I showed is ok, yet give chamfer, regular big to all pieces and do the the filleted corner metal.
  • Make water container like tray, gap from bottom or upper.
  • Open door to the side.
  • Make fans on the front and make them aesthetic, check ovens hided fans.
  • Make electric connection from up and bottom. Hold all cables in the bottom gaps.
  • You can use magnetic electric connection on container part.
  • Make connaction detail like lego. and one screw. Make them shorter and flat. You can use electric connection on them.
  • Try mat black, make white part black. Try beige and soft brown.
  • Get rid of main water unit.
  • Use 3 to 5 unit.
  • You can take it to the today.
  • Try plastic form metal parts, divide main unit two horizantaly.
  • Do rails to the tray bottom.
  • I ask them to open doors towerds to the bottom and slide them into unit. Its not effective.

Final Screening Insights

• For surface display on tray, use upper leds to indicate or app.

• For connection of metal parts, first screw than add isolation material and close with lid.

• For tray rails, use original metal drawer rail, and attach to plastic body.

• Produce outer body from metal and attach all the plastic companents to that.

• For the gap that near by interface, produce form and screw it to the body.

• Examine water discharge containers in drying machines.

• Create indented surfaces for water container.

• Make water container square, and the gap trapezoid to disattachment.

• Make form little bid conical on top and bottom.

• Connect pipes with rider. Creates flanges to attach pipes.

• Make normal opening one lid.

• Attach rubber feet to the connection parts directly. Inner from the unit, not visible.

• Show them in more irregular layouts.

• Make app similar to the product language.

App Content:

1. Menu: share consumption speed

2. Main layout:

3. Notifications: harvest trim water system error plant error

4. Close up: type date state water humadity tempature led type of nutrition

5. Additionla info, to show how to do

07.05.2020 Critique Insights (with Semih Danış)

I am adding images for clearity into drive link:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1pP4_V4Gebr_E4FqwvJKM1rii3Upu56cO?usp=sharing

  • Choose of material should be acoording to user segment. I can use metal bands like right under the interface, and make it continue as a frame. Which I like this idea, cause as Semih Hoca said its also solve problem of that door cant open because of fillet radius. I tried to make it smaller yet I dont like its aesthetic aspect. So I decided to make metal etc. bands near the door radius to make it smaller. Those bands also can use for sealing by adding silicone inside, to provide isolation.
  • For the mechanism of the doors, dividing doors in a half logical. And it can be foldable mechanism which fold the doors that divided half horzantaly. And sliding folded doors in to the unit will be suit my product language and give user to work area.
  • I shoul look IKEA products for connection part, for assembly inspirations. It shouldnt have to demontage easly.
  • For water container it can be placed in the mid and it shouldnt be that wide, I should define its for according to detailed usage scenario. I will make one water container. Also we discuse about the problem that fixing water container and matching it to the connection part( to transpass gas) Little snapfit details, lock systems, press and pull systems, rail systems can be used. Form should be matched to put container easly, I will work on it and create a internal detail here.
  • And about root container, it can be hold gap under the container to direct user, I also examine it while considering detailed scenario.
  • For platform, current system looks good I can developed further.
  • And for seperators I can providing sealing and divide leds and heaters two. And make system understand that, so work as it. Yet I figure out horizantel dividing kinda hard because I dont have enough space also for roots. And I should create a part with leds etc.
  • For the interface I should definately create a flow chart and decide what to show on device and on app, let which controllers to the user, where should be the notifications etc. On unit maybe user can activate interface with tapping two, pressing button etc and see the controllers. Maybe he wants to set a date, look conditions etc. Definately I should give codes to the units for matching via app to makes user understand easly which unit is which. Also I should definately remember that user wants to know which plant is which and it can be hard to understand in the growing period.

Last Form Decisions Before Adding Internal Pieces

(actual dimensions used for metarial thickness etc.)

If you display drive file according to name, I classified and ordered them

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16C9YCRemFqRlZn2Q39G88K5mCpjKyDXp?usp=sharing

  • As you can see unit contains of one skeleton, water container (6,5-7 litre which can hold 2 weeks min), root container and seed units, interface, lids and internal lightning/heating componants. I tried different materials for body, I am not sure if its should metal or plastic. Also I will be happy if you checked Form Trial Post (2 post before from this one) and help me to decide.
  • To summarize: water container will be seperated from internal system to not affect optimum conditions. User can reach plants both sided. And extra pieces for locking will be used. I decided to used double sided dovetail locking technique. Beside that with little indentations, units will be locked eachother to both make it more stable and allow user to lock even only two units. (I decided to connect electricity and gas via connection details yet, If user use two units only I couldnt use them, so I guess connection should be obtain from units)
  • In interface as you can see, its works like a screensaver. Connected units communicate with each other and show display togather. When water supply decreased in one of them, lightning will focused user attention to there. And he can open interface, and check water level any time when he approaches. It will be activated. Other type of controllers will be obtained via phone app.
  1. Screen saver: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mfA4S0-d5Max3criMFP3Z-zuLcoof2UE/view?usp=sharing
  2. Attention: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nEZhUGHYVoLwxGvoaDXps_2Kv6xGZCcn/view?usp=sharing
  3. Display: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bZNsqGJSP22oAK2iAEikB8nze3ISKcu5/view?usp=sharing

My Questions:

1- I realize that the proportion of the water container is too small aestheticly according to unit and root container. But if I made it bigger, it will be hard to carry its even 6,5 7 kilos right now. I can divide water container two half, like two water container.

2-Water containers dimensions are 5x45x30 cm right now. Its not optimal to carry liquid in it, maybe the vertical usage of the water container will solve both this and above problem.

3-I know that lids are not good right now, fillets are too much and its not easy to open and access. As I decided after the critiques with Bahar Hoca, I can use seperator to divide inside of the units. For two layers for small plants like micro herbs and if user wants to plant two seperate veggies in the same unit. Maybe two sided lids, like in the concept 2 in pre-jury. Do you have any other lid suggestions?

4-I start with the number five in the Form Trial Post (which is two post before from this one, please check) to create this one. I choose number five, cause its dimensions of diagonal edges, which creates the area for connection details. Yet is it too bulky? I tried to create transparency effect. Yet do you reccomend a form from the previos post to start?

5-I choose to use dove tail tecnique for connection parts. Yet they are two dimensional as Semih Hoca mentioned. I can make a wider section on the edges, split it in a half and connect on the middle. Like a snap fastener, while still using dove tail. What do you reccommend?

29.04.2020 Critique Insights (with Bahar Şener-Pedgley)

  • After my explanations, Bahar Hoca agree found logical about lineer placement. To divide holistic form, in large amount of units it can be relief in the front and back sides and connection details could be used for it.
  • I decided to use seperators to divide for both usage of the area for smaller plants and if user want to plant two kind of veggies. I am not making different sizes for the production cost. But if I will choose that direction, I will make them as a half of the original unit as Bahar Hoca reccommend.
  • Units could be accessable from both sides, and while connection details transpasses the gas and electricity, and also there will be closed parts in the mid section of units ( as you can see in the Octagon Form Trials 2 Post) for both connection and placcement of leds and heater panels, water unit placement could be any of them.
  • She agree with the comment that I decided to show only water and overall statement od the plant and system in the interface, with leds etc, not with icons (it could be complicated and not seeable in overall layout). She mention about it could be work as a kinda screensaver thing, that opens up when user will interact with it or get closer to it. It can be a decorative approach.
  • I should be carefull about the locking only two units, so there should be lock details in the units form, besides than connection details.
  • Finally, about the height of the units from floor. It should be heigher than the floor: both cleaning, seperation from basebooard and prevent user the harm units during cleaning with vacuum cleaner. There could be 3 way:
  1. Units could be have legs also those could be used for locking each other, its not optimal cause measurement arange accordingly both inside placement and overall dimensions of the environment. And it can be problematic if user wants to place units in the countertop etc.
  2. There could be optional seperate leg parts,  that can attach units later according to user needs. It can be attache infrom connection details too.
  3. There could be platform that can be optional too. It shouldnt affect overall form and look. It can be attach both units and the connection details.

Form Trials

Here is some of early stage form trials.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U6rk5dfl_-dwLk6Z59nZLne2fL4v7bVD/view?usp=sharing

As I mention in the previous posts (you can check after prejury post)

  • Metal areas are water containers which can detachable seperatly from system to not affect inner atmosphere
  • Other areas will be transparent, which contains the plant
  • Seperated parts from acyrlic areas are places for interfaces, which I planned to use surface display

25.04.20 Critique Insights (withb Erdi Özgürlük)

  • Logic and background of the project is solid
  • Focus on creating domestic (plastic, soft, neutral colors), aesthetic and holistic form and look
  • Check the stability
  • Lid like in the concept 1, cause leaking, maybe type of lid that used for ovens will be more suitable
  • Dont try to open lid to opposite direction to the gravity
  • You can give third dimention with surface textures and reflections
  • Second concept look industrial; use more minimal, one cube look like in the concept one
  • No wheels, not stable enough cause it touches ground from point
  • User can reach from both sides (even four, with circler motion but surfaces that touch each other eliminate that idea)
  • Think in one, and in the system
  • Simple, minimal interface (do more in the app: share, trim, track)..it could be showed with swinging light

Octagon Form Trials

External Advisor Critique Notes

  • Placement should be 2 directional, shouldnt be diverse because of surface usage of geometry.

(For example:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OlZ1367bt11egMq9v19RWjiiJeDgrwSK/view?usp=sharing)

  • It could be basic geometries like hexagon, square, octagon or square that cropped from corners.
  • Cause if it will be not basic geometries, there is at least more than one form; product could be consist of external case part and internal parts like water container, interface, plant cell could be detachable. Internal parts arranged by user according the placement of case.
  • Modules should be fit perfectly each other, if its not cleaning will be a issue.
  • Gaps between modules could be used for water containers and attachment parts. Modules could be transparent, only water containers and attachment parts could be colorful, from different material and logo printed.
  • Attachment parts, can provide connection, locking, transmission between units.
  • Water containers should be detach seperatly, it shouldnt affect closed system that provides optimum conditions for plants.
  • Full-empty effect can create subtract modules.
  • For inspiration wall tiles and traditional basic patterns can used.
  • (For interface water level indicator should be more visible, maybe seperate from others)

Pre-Jury Feedbacks

Cause I am waiting for prejury feedbacks, I will developed my forms and details afterwards.

Here my pre-jury slide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XJ788SPN7z8pSfGwbpRt7oMlaXIP_u9K/view?usp=sharing

With critiques of my external advisor, I planned to go with concept one, yet add it an external water container. You can find my initials in previous post.

Pre-Jury Feedbacks

ASPECTS GOING WELL…

Concept A
– It seems more suitable to proceed, comparing to
Concept B incase of module size and form relationship
for the home purposes.

Both
– The idea and detailing is very thoroughly and well done for
both cases.

ASPECTS THAT MUST IMPROVE…

Concept A
– Form and modularity need to be studied regarding maintenance of plants, electric circulation and etc.
– Forms enabling repetition and pattern can be proposed to make more suitable for different places in home.
– Natural materials, soft color schemes match with idea of home
growing

Concept B
– The porduct loks have an industrial language which may not be suitable for home enviroment

14.04.2020 External Advisor Critique Notes

  • Combine two concepts: main water unit is necessary for a great number of unit usage. Yet, every unit should have its own water container. Using additional water unit could be optional.
  • Form should be minimal, simple, hygienic look.
  • Explore form over filleted geometrical shapes, not organic shapes. Transparency could be used. Such as hexagonal forms can be explored, and contrast such as full-empty forms can be discovered.
  • For form inspirations, sci-fi movies, screen mirrors(paravan), seperators, hygiene products can be searched.
  • Locking between units, can be arranged with little details on form. Units should be stable, wheels are not logical.
  • Interface should be on product and app control (for off product usage) to show water resource etc. (It can be showed with rgb leds and maybe could be with icons by using surface display.)

I added 3 more forms while I am showing external advisors.

  • Concept 1 dimensions and numbers of units should be consider again
  • Pipes for Concept 2 will be designed
  • Concept 2 can be placed in revers position
  • Concepts will be present in the modern context (with island countertop, kitchen that combined with livingroom) with holistic environment
  • Define keywords to present project for pre-jury

Posted by esmanur ozdemir on 11.04.2020 under Concept Development

Two Concepts

My two concepts differentiate due to system usage.

In Concept 1:

  • Units are seperate
  • Has their own water source
  • Electricity transmitted via connection between modules
  • Modules are heavier so user should take out plant seperately
  • More free to alternate forms
  • Different nutritions for different plants
  • Dimensions of my modules 45 cm height, 45 cm width, 30 cm depth According to needed area for water resource, inner systems and area for plants to grow.
  • So I put 4-6 modules in 2 levels, which mean they need flat bottom and top. I can play with it (maybe) via transparency effect.

In Concept 2:

  • Units connect  via main connection system
  • They connect electricity via main system
  • Maybe they will connect tap water
  • And (?) while water passing, it get nourish from a filter.
  • Modules will be smaller and lighter
  • Main system will be stable so user arrange at the beginning
  • And also I forgat to model yet I thought maybe I can use tangram as a main system and they can change units on it maybe.

Commen Points:

  • They both use usage scenario that I mention, difference is in concept 1 user get drawer or tray, in concept 2 user get module to countertop.
  • They both use surface displays and off product controls
  • System will be same and in both humadity, tempature, nutrition, lightning will be controlled.
  • For mushrooms transparent parts can get darkening.
  • And also via lightning cycles I will aim control growth cycle too.

I really found hard to create a form for Concept 2, and there is some form trials. You can also found form trials inFog Ponic Form Trials post second link.

Yet I try to explain my scenarios and concepts.

I reccommend to check my Fogponic form trials post (which is 2 post ago.)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1y_Jvlg0BnFaFM3uBJDc8f6Ic0YXn6LgG/view?usp=sharing

I decided to use fogponic system which is type of aeroponics. Its use foggerr pump which is (3cm diameter 2 cm height) little pump, while 1-5 litre water is enough. So I changed my diametres to 45cm (height) x 45cm (lenght) x 30 cm(width). I can plant  10 to 12 seeds, and arrange 30 cm height to plants grow. However some plants like pepper can grow to 60cm. User should trim plants all the time.

  • Arrangable height not allow to modularity.
  • With main skeleton system how I can I nutritiate water for different plants.
  • Making big and little units could be both practical yet what happan I dont use that one.
  • I should definitly think more three dimentional.
  • I should make aparats for germinating or arranging area for mushrooms, cause it should be dark. So maybe plants could be in capsules which can use as a drawers.
  • This mean, outer units can arrange at begginning, and not changable easly afterwards and work as a skeleton system.

With the table of needed dimensions and some examples of existing systems, I do not need that much gap between plants yet,

  • Should I made arrangable height?
  • Should I made pre existing arranged units- which the area looks empty while plants growing?
  • What will happen if plants grow too much in the width too, they are tend to spread- Although I can lead users to trim with time arrangements- and I can arrange growth cycles like in my pre existed ideas but should I make them fully closed systems or not?

Posted by esmanur ozdemir on 01.04.2020 under Concept Development

Hi!

My Dear Instructors,

I uploaded 9 new posts yesterday with this one, to show you my idea developments. In another words, how my project reach this point.

My questions to you is that,

  • I try to explain why I choose individual production than communial one in my previous posts. Yet I give user to that freedom, he can use communual areas easily too. I am thinking that I can merge communual areas with my sharing idea in initial idea jury. Sharing idea is that, sharing the food you produce much or less with others, we can use communual areas for that.
  • Paravan system of the product can used as a seperator, american kitchen wall, or decorative objects. And in the future range of 5 to 10 years, my researches shows that people tend to growth their own houses. And future houses can evolve according to that, I try to examine object things that can be replaced with this product, but this is the idea that I enjoy most. I wonder, logic behinds that is sensible enough.

Final Concepts Ideation

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wN7pAKb7ZH-iarkMGBOCyskm0E-oCcMX/view?usp=sharing

  • According to last critiques product evolved a moduler paravan type.
  • User can arrange it according to his needs, and places.
  • He can placed it both his home or communual areas.
  • It will be a almost fully automated product, for future that after 5 to 10 years from now.
  • Those system can evolve brick system for future. (Bricks only used as paravan, its not an structural elements)
  • Modules will be almost 40cm x 60cm x 60 cm, 4 5 unit
  • Time arrangement mode can used, while controlling growth cycle with light. Production can arrange according to consumption and slow growth mode adapted.
  • Seeds could be pre-planted into fiber sypheres which used in soilless agriculture. It can ease process.
  • 2,5 cm gap between seeds are enough, yet plants like lettuces place much more space after growth. Surface display can indicate this during planting, or units can be arrange according to that.
  • Aerophonics system is more efficient and water preserved. It can be arrange both vertical and horizantel. It works as spreying water with nutrition to roots.

Modules could arrange in three ways:

  1. Units can growth constantly
  2. Units of holistic form
  3. Units get attached on the skeleton system which pass electricity, water etc.

(all units styles can be consist of more than one form)

(I decided to generate my 2 pre jury concepts according to merging style of units)

Four Revised Early Concept

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1wbkx7MfKxDq0jK_XAqlLQ7DWbMWVnRXv

  • First Page:

There could be pre-sowed seeds in fibers which used in soilless agriculture. User only put Seed-Syphere to the nest and take it back there easly after growth. In this way, sepiration of germinating and growth cycles can control easily.

  • Second Page:

Corners of the kitchens usually dead areas. We can use those areas with automated shelf systems. Because the area is restricted maybe this idea can adapted to micro food idea.

  • Third Page:

What could gonna happen to my harvest if I am not home like a month? It can be cold storage system with auto harvest mechanism which work likes cnc machines. In this idea user get interact with storage part, so growth part could be on the ceiling.

  • Fourth Page:

In fourth idea secondary windows or stairwell can be used. Yet, with windows closed systems can not be obtained. And I also enjoy the stairwell idea, accessibility is important. So on, product can place nearby the cooking area.

In Those Placement Concepts:

  1. Paravan (modular, paravan building system)
  2. Storage (oto harvest system with storage unit)
  3. Corner (as I said before I can use corners of the kitchens)
  4. Fridge (modern fridges getting smaller, and this product take some of its load. maybe extra space from smaller fridges can used for it)

Diagram about Indoor, Outdoor Factors and Growth Cycle

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1wqlSfU7dhtJ7c4dX5twgtpGLicvhnIgi

I created a diagram about extrenal factors and needs of plants for optimum environments to decide controlling aspects and sensors, mechanisms I need, according to my researches which I did before.

I choosed 10 types of fruits and vegetables. I eliminated some of them because of the area and decided to produce 7 of them:

  • Herbs (basil, mint, chives etc.)
  • Green vegetables (lettuces, spinaches, kales)
  • Scallions
  • Radishes
  • Green/Sweet Peppers
  • Beans
  • Mushrooms

Persona

I estimate to market at next 5 to 10 years time range for this product.

And create a persona according to this time range. And found out, a generation which cares producing their own foods and healthy/organic eating will be dominate this time range.

Communual or Individual

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1x-0hvLa0BeHyiAU2_tU1xfJ6-a5c2hx4

I analyze and explore benefits and cons of communual and individual systems. Which is my main point is, WHY NOT CHANGE IS STARTED TODAY. So this product is a transition product. It main purpose is preparing people to future trends while increasing consciousness about food wastage.

My first idea is, cause it is hard to change infrastructure of buildings and cities today, I should focused on specialized areas for placement. A product that can be transformed to future version of itself which is communual with time.

OUTDOOR/INDOOR: (Why it should be indoor?)

  • While there is restricted areas in future, agriculture areas will placed on/in buildings.
  • It should be closed system for timeless production and more efficiency.

COMMUNUAL/INDIVIDUAL: (Why it should be individual?)

  • One of the base point of the project is produce as you need, which means tracking of consumption of a individual should be accurate. If person number for supply production increase, standard deviation will increase too. Which means controlling to production; moreover, food wastage will getting harder.
  • Communual production could be more easier, and cause less responsibility for individuals. Yet, while its gonna be closed and autonomous system for efficiency, it is already easy. And do I want get rid of responsibility? If people will be produce theirselves, they gonna be more careful about products and wastages.

COD Workshop

Future Oriented

After Initial Idea Jury, I decided to go on with a future oriented concept. Which foundated with United Nations’ datas.

According to UN data’s, in 2050 human popullation reaches 9,3 Billion, which means there should be resources of three planets to meet those people’s needs. While we are looking at predictions about agriculture and architectural systems of 2050, we see buildings/cities which is self sufficient. You can see that, agriculture systems became local and because there is no places for agriculture, it places on buildings etc.

Because there are already pollution in earth, and it will be increase in future soilles agriculture become more popular in today too. It will be widespread in future because it is more productive and efficient. For example, aerophonics are %98 more efficient than soil based agriculture systems.

Even now, food supplying process getting shorter to prevent food wastage by doing localization while getting rid of external suppliers like super markets. In that base people can also make sure about organic roots of foods.
