Short Bio

Halil Ersin Soken graduated “Summa cum Laude” from the Astronautical Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University in 2007. In 2008, he completed his second degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He earned his Ph.D. in Space and Astronautical Science from the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (Japan) in 2013. During his Ph.D. studies, he was a visiting researcher at Aalborg University (Denmark) for three months.

From 2014 to 2018, Dr. Soken was with the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), first as a research associate and then as a system researcher. From 2018 to 2020, he was with TUBITAK Space Technologies Research Institute (Turkey) as a chief researcher and a team member of the institute’s Attitude & Orbit Control Group. He was also an adjunct lecturer at the Aerospace Department of Middle East Technical University (METU). Since September 2020, he has been with the Aerospace Engineering Department of METU, where he teaches mainly on spacecraft dynamics, control, and flight mechanics.

His research interests are spacecraft attitude determination & control, spacecraft dynamics, and guidance & navigation. He has co-authored two books, more than 30 journal articles, and approximately 80 international conference/symposium papers. He received the METU Parlar Foundation Research Encouragement Award in 2022. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the AIAA, and an affiliate of the IFAC. He has been associate editor for IEEE Access since 2017 and editor for Space: Science & Technology since 2023.
