RETHINKING THE IMAGE OF ÜMİTKÖY SİTESİ

Group 3 determines a sub-theme suitable for the workshop, which is about increasing the quality of life for the Ümitköy cooperative houses. They rethink the image of the housing site and identify four key topics to achieve a better living environment for the residents. There are: 1) Exterior Facades, 2) Changing Pedestrian Experience, 3) Landscaping Gardens and Common Places, Community Belonging, and 4) Energy Efficiency. Firstly, the «facade» is critical for renovating the image of the cooperation site. The façade renovation will improve buildings’ heat insulation by parge coat and revitalize the building image to impulse innovation and modernity in the community. Second, to make the living area more suitable for different pedestrian uses, Group 3 offers design solutions such as soft pedestrian road material, suitable traffic lights, and a pedestrian road rearrangement that can address the needs of different user groups such as the elderly, children and disadvantaged people. Third, for the arrangement of common areas with the landscape, Group 3 suggests that the waste of organic food be composted by the residents and used to regenerate the soil. In this way, the earth will be suitable for developing new species by meeting with organic fertilizer, and residents will be able to create more collective relations. Fourth, within the scope of energy efficiency, the group suggests successful exterior insulation that can reduce annual energy consumption by 30-45% in the housing site. Thanks to the location of the houses on the southwest axis, Group 3 claims that the site is suitable for solutions such as insulation and central heating, taking into account the sunshine data of Ankara. The group developed new solutions for the housing site thanks to communication, collaboration, and exchanging ideas between the expert team and the residents.
