THE BOLD MOVE

Ümitköy Sitesi offers a sense of belonging to its residents who have been there for a long time. That is why Group 1 is interested in community engagement within the site at the risk of diminishment. Although the former households, with a lower percentage, still maintain a sense of belonging, the recent tenants feel less attached to the area. To bring back the healthy communal life, Group 1 was after the question, “How can we have a community whose members want to be here, to be together, and to sustain the estate?”. The group used the site visit to take notes and photographs from the site, ask questions and make voice recordings of the residents (with the approval of the surveyed person). The analyses revealed that the site’s value is a secondary feature for the residents because of the poor structural conditions of the site. It is necessary to provide some structural improvements; otherwise, this site will not survive after about 20 years. Group 1 developed a design idea within a strategic plan called the Bold Move to attain durability to the site and save the community engagement and sense of attachment to the site. Accordingly, Group 1 proposes the three critical interventions for the community -communal services, the buildings (structural conditions) and the environmental issues. Ultimately, Group 1 aims to balance the plan and the customized/individualized development.
