ASCE GeoCongress 2020

Me and my team friend Muhammet Durmaz ranked 2nd place in American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) GeoInstitute GeoPrediction 2020 student competition which is held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in February 2020.

Our team, which is composed of METU Civil Engineering undergraduate student Satuk Buğrahan Sari (me) and graduate student Muhammet Durmaz, ranked 2nd place in GeoPrediction 2020 geotechnical student competition organized by American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) GeoInstitute.

Based on the evaluation of reports of the competitors, we have successfully passed the preliminary evaluations, were selected among the 6 finalist teams and invited to make an oral presentation at the annual GeoInstitute congress (https://www.geocongress.org/) on 25-28 February 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Based on the oral presentations, in the final rankings, we ranked 2nd place in GeoPrediction 2020 (1st rank: South Dakota University).

The topic of 2020 GeoPrediction competition was to accurately predict the location of the failure surface of a landslide that occurred in USA. We were given the results of site investigation including 6 boreholes, piezometric head elevation, Standard Penetration Test results and Atterberg limits as sources; no any other laboratory or in-situ test data was available. To be able to solve this slope stability problem, we used Rocscience Slide software for our analyses and calculations.

It was an incredible experience for me, although I am not pleased with the result…

Special thanks to the companies/institutes that provide travel support to us: Turkish Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ZMGM), AdimODTU and Rocscience company.

And, special thanks to our academic advisor Assoc. Prof. Nejan Huvaj for her endless supports!
