On 25 December 2023, METU FLE undergraduate students Öykü Gündüz & Buse Karakaş presented an overview of their very interesting, ongoing study on the SNARC effect in the Processing of Grammatical Number in Turkish (submitted to TÜBİTAK, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye).

25 Aralık 2023 tarihli toplantımızda ODTÜ Yabancı Diller Eğitimi Bölümü lisans öğrencileri Öykü Gündüz ve Buse Karakaş LaProc üyelerine TÜBİTAK’a proje önerisi olarak sunulan “The SNARC effect in the Processing of Grammatical Number in Turkish” başlıklı son derece ilginç çalışmalarını sundular.

On November 6th, Dr. Alper Kumcu (Hacettepe University, Department of Translation and Interpreting) gave a very interesting talk (“Birds, worms, honesty and vanity: (Re)activating spatial perception in language”) to LaProc members and a group of interested graduate and undergraduate students.

In his inspiring talk, Dr. Kumcu presented the results of a series of experiments that investigated how the perception of space can modulate how well individual words are remembered, even though space is neither relevant nor necessary for successful retrieval. Dr. Kumcu further discussed some methodological issues concerning the norming of words based on lexicosemantic and sensory variables.

6 Kasım’daki toplantımızda Dr. Alper Kumcu (Hacettepe Üniversitesi, Mütercim-Tercümanlık Bölümü) LaProc üyelerine ve konuk lisans/lisansüstü öğrencilere “Birds, worms, honesty and vanity: (Re)activating spatial perception in language” başlıklı bir konuşma gerçekleştirdi.

LaProc members Bilal Kırkıcı and Orhan Demir joined COST Action CA22139 “Justice to youth language needs: human rights undermined by an invisible disadvantage (Y-JustLang)“. The COST action was officially launched on October 23rd, 2023, during the first Management Committee (MC) meeting held in Brussels. B.Kırkıcı will serve as MC member for 4 years (2023-2027).

LaProc üyeleri Bilal Kırkıcı ve Orhan Demir “Justice to youth language needs: human rights undermined by an invisible disadvantage (Y-JustLang)” başlıklı (CA22139) COST Aksiyonuna katılım sağlamışlardır. COST CA22139, 23 Ekim 2023’te Brüksel’de gerçekleştirilen ilk Yönetim Komitesi toplantısıyla resmi olarak başlamıştır. B. Kırkıcı 4 sene boyunca (2023-2027) aksiyonun Yönetim Komitesi üyesi olarak görev yapacaktır.

On September 6th, 2023, LaProc member Enis Oğuz successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “Investigating Translation Equivalent Priming: The Impact of Task, Item and Individual Differences” (supervisor: Bilal Kırkıcı). Congratulations, Dr. Oğuz!

6 Eylül 2023’te LaProc üyesi Eniz Oğuz “Investigating Translation Equivalent Priming: The Impact of Task, Item and Individual Differences” başlıklı doktora tezini (danışman: Bilal Kırkıcı) başarıyla savunmuştur. Tebrikler Dr. Oğuz!

Former PhD student Hasibe Kahraman received the METU Thesis Award for her PhD thesis titled “Individual Differences in the L1 and L2 Processing of Morphologically Complex Words” (supervisor: Bilal Kırkıcı). Hasibe continues her research at Macquarie University (Australia).
