The social side of mining has always been a subject of debate. Artisanal mining is a known issue in regions where mining had a major role in economics for a certain time. Unlicensed miners go after gemstones and other valuable minerals that they can extract in small amounts by risking their lives. This recent incident in South Africa points out the desperate situation of unlicensed miners. Miners trapped underground refuse to communicate after they realised they faced arrest.
