Get to Know Me
Hello everyone, my name is Melissa Polat. I am 25 years old and a senior student in the Civil Engineering Department at Middle East Technical University. I truly enjoy being part of METU and thriving in an academic environment. For this reason, I am determined to pursue an academic career after graduation and continue my education at the graduate level.
My primary academic interest lies in construction materials, and I hope to further specialize in this field. I am genuinely motivated by ongoing research and emerging developments, and I find the learning process deeply rewarding. In particular, I am eager to explore topics related to sustainability and circular construction practices, including the reuse and recycling of materials.
One of the aspects I enjoy most is working in a laboratory setting. Designing and preparing experiments independently, translating technical knowledge into practice, and observing material behavior firsthand are both exciting and fulfilling for me. This hands-on experience is a major reason why I am especially drawn to laboratory-based work.
In addition, I have an interest in geotechnical engineering and enjoy taking courses from this area. This semester, I am taking CE 469. I find this branch of civil engineering both intellectually engaging and highly inspiring.
Outside of academics, I am interested in music and travelling. These activities help me recharge, stay grounded, and maintain a healthy balance.
