Progress After First Critiques

After the first critiques, I decided to go with the idea of  using plants in small pots for chess pieces. Regarding to the recommendations from my lecturers, I thought about different materials and different concepts but I couldn’t find any useful materials such as wires. However, thanks to feedbacks, rather than using different natural materials I focused on making a more sustainable chess set and provide an extra gardening activity within the chess set. So I started to make researches about the plants and seeds that can be germinated in house conditions.

I started to the germination process with the seeds I found at home. At present; I have chickpeas, beans, wheats, lentils and lemon seeds. But I need to have one more different type since there are 6 different pieces.

I didn’t decide which plant is corresponding to which piece as I don’t know how they are going to react and what kind of plants I’m going to have as an end result. I also considered the idea of making little additions to the pots to differentiate the different pieces if I cannot have a satisfying end result with different seeds.

All in all, I am working on germination process and trying to develop different concepts for the pots. I believe form development for the pots will be more efficient after seeing the seeds reaction.

Initial Sketches

I firstly started with how many pieces I need and what kind of materials I can use. I thought of a couple of materials for the pieces and one material for the board. But I didn’t sketch certain forms.

I thought about colors of the opposite sides, how can I emphasize the different colors. Also I tried to make sure that board and pieces are going to look like a set, so I thought about using similar materials both on board and pieces.

I thought of using the corrugated structure of the cardboards material so I can make the squares without painting it.

I used the idea of our cancelled homework “transforming packaging” to transform the chessboard into a box to provide a practical storage to the user.
