Making of Modern Japan

One of the most developed country in the world. But how it came to be ?

Before WWII

Before WWII, Japan was in constant war with china and korea. While they opened their ports to the Christian traders, Japan did not in order to protect it’s culture from their influence. That last only a little while. When they saw the great china fell to the hands of the West, they were quick to open their ports to the Americans. With this, The Meiji Restoration began to restore the imperial rule.

They began to westernize on a large scale, seeing how advanced and how far left behind they were. Corrupt Shogun and Samurai’s were stripped of their power. A riot broke out to bring down the government. This civil unrest called Boshnin War ended by 1870 and the new order with a Constitutional  Monarchy took various steps to strengthen the country.

After WWII

Having being bombed by 2 nuclear bombs, Japan was left devastated but hopeful. They forced themselves to an economic revival. Allied countries demilitarized Japan which allowed them to spend their defense budget on developing and rebuilding. During Cold War, japan was an important ally to the US because Communism had spread to China and Korea. US helped Japan to rebuilt their industries.

Japan made technology and exported it to other markets such as US. United States was not only a market but also a big source of capital. Creation of those new technologies created new job opportunities. This resulted in a growing economy and more money  flew into Japan.
