Personal Educational Philosophy

At the end of my 4 years of education, I started to see teaching as cooking. People cannot live without food. Cooks, on the other hand, not only give us food, but also make us enjoy that food by making delicious meals. Teaching is just like that. People cannot live without learning, and teachers remind their students how enjoyable learning is. After 4 years of CEIT education and 22 years of student history, I realized that there are 3 subjects that I consider most important for education. These are respectively; planning, being a good observer and loving teaching.

Planning is necessary even for living. I can’t complete a day without a plan. The same is true for cooks. The best example of this is recipes. You can make pre-meal preparations for cooking. Teaching is just like that. You must make plans to explain a lesson. You should plan everything from the materials and activities you will use in the lesson to the seating arrangement of the students. You should always start with the larger plan. It is for the chefs to choose which dish to cook. Then you gather the appropriate materials. For example, the flavor of a tomato grown in the season will be very different. This lesson should be planned. First of all, you have to choose what you will teach in that period. Then you have to line them up. Certain topics should be covered in certain periods. Even matters corresponding to important days should be given priority. For example, a lesson about Atatürk in a class to be held in the fall semester will be held on November 10 and will affect the students more that week. This was the most important planning I learned from the lessons. Considering every detail and being prepared. The pandemic period has shown me that things can be very different. Although the pandemic was a bad thing, it helped me to observe and made me think about what to do if I faced such a situation when I became a teacher in the future. Although we usually think of effective learning environments face to face, we can actually prepare this effective learning environment over the internet. For example, if a cook is going to use an ingredient in a dish and that thing is missinghe will use another ingredient to add the flavor of the missing ingredients to another dish. Likewise, In this process, teachers started to adapt their lessons to the internet environment. In other words, if we cannot provide face-to-face education, we use the internet environment to continue our education. And of course, it is aimed to make this environment as efficient as possible. My idea is to prepare all my plans for the internet when I become a teacher in the future. Of course, we may encounter technological problems in face-to-face education, but some materials can be used both in face-to-face education and on the internet. In short, planning prepared for every situation is very important to create an effective learning environment.

Being a good observer is the second important issue. The teacher should be a very good observer both in the classroom and outside the classroom. We cannot find out whether our students have really learned a subject or not through exams alone. We must observe our students very well. Even though he is physically present in class at the moment, he may have dreamed his mind. However, in order to prevent this, we should include our student in the class in a cheerful way in line with the plans we made before. Just like chefs, chefs do not mix and cook ingredients while cooking. The ingredients are added in order and they observe the moment of cooking. If something goes wrong, they intervene at the right moments and save that food. Therefore, it is very important to know how to observe situations. Sometimes it can be useful for the lesson to make observations about our students’ lives outside without getting too individualized. For example, if a student cannot concentrate on the lesson at all, the reason may be something that happened to family members and it may be difficult to attend the lesson and we may encounter understanding for that day. Just like chefs researching where ingredients come from. For example, you know that the pepper paste from Antakya will not be as hot as in Ankara and you prepare your meal accordingly. In conclusion, observation is very important, but we should not harm any of our students by avoiding sudden movements without sufficient evidence.

Finally, thanks to my observations throughout my student life, the most important thing for education is to love teaching. Even if a teacher has planned everything well, he cannot create an effective learning environment without loving teaching. Not only for teachers, of course, doing your job with love brings success for every profession. While many people receive the same training, some are more successful than others. The main reason for this is that he loves his job. the food of A cook who loves his job and a cook who doesn’t like his job will never taste the same. I’m sure those who love their job will acquire a better taste in tomato soup made with the same ingredients. It has nothing to do with “taste of your hand” in Turkish. Those Chefs flavored that soup with love. One of the two teachers teaching the same course likes their profession and the other does not. The other definitely affects student engagement. The teacher always keeps the class more engaged because he enjoys his work. Thanks to an incident that happened to me in high school, I had this thought for the first time, and with my later observations, I think that this thought is correct. Almost the whole class got a passing grade from the literature course we took in high school 1. Our teacher was knowledgeable, but he expressed himself that he never wanted to be a teacher. Like my other friends, I was sure that I had learned nothing that year. The following year, another teacher came to our literature class who loved to teach. Everyone got the highest grade in literature that year. But it wasn’t just that. Even today, our high school friends remember the subjects of Divan Literature. This shows that we did not not memorize and actually learn. This was the first event that allowed me to start observing, and I have always maintained this observation throughout my student life. As a result, we must first love to teach

In conclusion, as teachers of the future, we must be well-planned, good observers and individuals who love teaching.
