Prof. Sönmez holds a B.Sc. (Middle East Technical University 1990), a M.Sc. (Iowa State University 1992) and a Ph.D. (Iowa State University 1996), in Civil Engineering. He has worked as planning engineer and site project controls manager in international pipeline and process plant projects between 1996 and 2002. In 2002 he has joined department Civil Engineering at METU, and became a full professor in 2017.
