Bu yaz\u0131da Atlantis\u2019te g\u00fcnlerin nas\u0131l ge\u00e7ti\u011fini anlatmak istiyorum. Dal\u0131\u015flar elbette en \u00f6nemli operasyon ama gemideki d\u00fczeni g\u00f6r\u00fcnce \u015funu fark ettim: o dal\u0131\u015flar\u0131 ve ara\u015ft\u0131rmay\u0131 m\u00fcmk\u00fcn k\u0131lan \u015fey sistematik \u00e7al\u0131\u015fma ve g\u00fcnl\u00fck rutinler.<\/p>\n<p>Atlantis\u2019e \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131ktan sonra ba\u015f ara\u015ft\u0131rmac\u0131lar (PI\u2019lar) k\u0131sa bir toplant\u0131 yap\u0131p t\u00fcm bilim ekibini; uzmanl\u0131k alan\u0131na ve pratik becerilerine g\u00f6re tak\u0131mlara ay\u0131rd\u0131lar. Bu noktada k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck bir ger\u00e7e\u011fi not d\u00fc\u015feyim: Ara\u015ft\u0131rma gemisinde i\u015f hi\u00e7 bitmez. Gece-g\u00fcnd\u00fcz fark etmeksizin ara\u015ft\u0131rma devam eder. Bir \u015fey biter, di\u011feri ba\u015flar; bazen de ayn\u0131 anda ba\u015flar. O y\u00fczden i\u015f b\u00f6l\u00fcm\u00fc \u015fart.<\/p>\n<p>Benim ana g\u00f6revim, Alvin\u2019in hidrotermal bacalardan \u00f6rnek al\u0131rken kulland\u0131\u011f\u0131 <strong>major sampler<\/strong> denen titanyum \u00f6rnekleyicilerin bir sonraki dal\u0131\u015fa haz\u0131rlanmas\u0131. Bu i\u015f i\u00e7in gereken en kritik yetenek, \u00e7ok da narin olmayan bir burun: \u00e7\u00fcnk\u00fc derin deniz canl\u0131lar\u0131n\u0131n kemosentezde kulland\u0131\u011f\u0131 <strong>hidrojen s\u00fclf\u00fcr<\/strong> ger\u00e7ekten k\u00f6t\u00fc kokuyor. \u00c7\u00fcr\u00fck yumurta benzetmesi kibar kalabilir. Ana par\u00e7alar\u0131 foto\u011fraflarda g\u00f6rebilece\u011finiz gibi \u015f\u00f6yle sayabiliriz: baca \u00e7\u0131k\u0131\u015flar\u0131ndan hassas \u00f6rnekleme yapabilmek i\u00e7in bir boru (nozzle), \u00f6rne\u011fin doldurulaca\u011f\u0131 \u00f6rnek haznesi (main cylinder), \u00f6rnekleme i\u015flemini ba\u015flatan ate\u015fleme mekanizmas\u0131 (valve cylinder) ve \u00f6rnek \u00e7ekme i\u015flemini yapan pistonu hareketlendiren b\u00fcy\u00fck yay (large spring) ve Alvin\u2019in robot koluna uygun tutacak (T-handle). Her major \u00e7ift olarak haz\u0131rlan\u0131yor. Her \u00e7ift bir termometre ve bir T-handle payla\u015f\u0131r. B\u00f6ylece ald\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131z \u00f6rnekler her seferinde iki kopya olmu\u015f oluyor. Alvin\u2019in sepetine 6 \u00e7ift major s\u0131\u011f\u0131yor. Yani dal\u0131\u015f ve \u00f6rneklemelerde her \u015fey yolunda giderse toplamda 9 litre kadar \u00f6rnek alabiliyoruz.<\/p>\n<p>Majorlar\u0131 dal\u0131\u015fa haz\u0131rlamak i\u00e7in \u00f6nce en son vidas\u0131na kadar s\u00f6k\u00fcyoruz. Sonra her par\u00e7ay\u0131 hassas bir \u015fekilde %10\u2019luk hidroklorik asit ve saf su ile temizliyoruz. \u00d6rnek haznesinin temizli\u011fi tamamlan\u0131r tamamlanmaz, kontaminasyondan ka\u00e7\u0131nmak i\u00e7in birle\u015ftirme tezgah\u0131na getirilip hemen kapat\u0131l\u0131yor (sealed!). Temizlenen di\u011fer par\u00e7alar\u0131 da takarak temizlik a\u015famas\u0131n\u0131 tamaml\u0131yoruz. Bu \u015fekilde haz\u0131rlanan 6 \u00e7ift major \u015fafak vaktini bekliyor.<\/p>\n<p>Dal\u0131\u015f \u00f6ncesi majorlar\u0131n son haz\u0131rl\u0131\u011f\u0131 ise ate\u015flenmek \u00fczere kurulmas\u0131 (cocking). Sabah 8\u2019deki dal\u0131\u015ftan \u00f6nce sabaha kar\u015f\u0131 uyan\u0131p majorlar\u0131 kurmak \u00fczere laboratuvara gidiyorum. \u00c7\u00fcnk\u00fc m\u00fchendis ekibinin Alvin\u2019i haz\u0131rlamas\u0131 i\u00e7in majorlar\u0131n en ge\u00e7 6\u2019da teslim edilmi\u015f olmas\u0131 gerekiyor. Bu kurma i\u015flemi b\u00fcy\u00fck yay\u0131 s\u0131k\u0131\u015ft\u0131rmak ve ate\u015fleyici piston ile kilitlemek a\u015famalar\u0131ndan olu\u015fuyor. \u00c7ok uzun bir vida yard\u0131m\u0131 ile bu g\u00fc\u00e7l\u00fc yay\u0131 ittirerek s\u0131k\u0131\u015ft\u0131r\u0131yoruz. ODT\u00dc ekibi olarak, Alvin\u2019den gelen \u00f6rneklerin <strong>kimyasal i\u00e7eriklerinin daha al\u0131n\u0131r al\u0131nmaz \u00f6l\u00e7\u00fclmesinden<\/strong> de sorumluyuz. Benim pay\u0131ma da yine az \u00f6nce bahsetti\u011fim hidrojen s\u00fclf\u00fcr d\u00fc\u015ft\u00fc. \u00c7\u00fcr\u00fck yumurta kokusundan ka\u00e7\u0131\u015f yok. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>\u00d6l\u00e7\u00fcmde kulland\u0131\u011f\u0131m y\u00f6ntem \u201cspektrofotometri\u201d \u2014 kula\u011fa haval\u0131 geliyor ama asl\u0131nda \u00e7ok temel bir prensibe dayan\u0131yor. Hedef bile\u015fikle se\u00e7ici \u015fekilde reaksiyona girip <strong>renk olu\u015fturan<\/strong> bir reaktif kullan\u0131l\u0131yor; cihaz da bu rengin yo\u011funlu\u011funu \u00f6l\u00e7erek sana konsantrasyon hakk\u0131nda bilgi veriyor. Hatta baz\u0131 kurulumlarda cihaz neredeyse bilgisayara ba\u011flanan bir cep telefonu kadar k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck olabiliyor. Basit, evet; ama denizde, zaman bask\u0131s\u0131 alt\u0131nda, h\u0131zl\u0131 ve g\u00fcvenilir bir y\u00f6ntem.<\/p>\n<p>Alvin okyanusun taban\u0131nda bizim i\u00e7in \u00f6rnek toplarken (e\u011fer o g\u00fcn ben i\u00e7inde de\u011filsem) \u00f6nceki g\u00fcn\u00fcn \u00f6rneklerini renklendirip \u00f6l\u00e7\u00fcyorum. O g\u00fcn gelecek \u00f6rnekler i\u00e7in de haz\u0131rl\u0131k yap\u0131yorum. Hidrojen s\u00fclf\u00fcr, al\u0131nan \u00f6rneklerin i\u00e7inde \u00e7\u00f6z\u00fcnm\u00fc\u015f bir gaz. Gazl\u0131 i\u00e7eceklerdeki gaz gibi s\u0131v\u0131 i\u00e7inde \u00e7\u00f6z\u00fcnm\u00fc\u015f halde bulunuyor. Ama \u00e7ok u\u00e7ucu bir gaz oldu\u011fu i\u00e7in \u00e7ok h\u0131zl\u0131 bir \u015fekilde bir bile\u015fik halinde \u00e7\u00f6kt\u00fcr\u00fclmesi gerekiyor. Bunun i\u00e7in de \u00f6rnekleme yap\u0131lacak t\u00fcplere dal\u0131\u015f kodu ve \u00f6rnekleme b\u00f6lgesinin ad\u0131 yaz\u0131ld\u0131ktan sonra \u00e7inko asetat ve sodyum hidroksit ekliyoruz. Bu sayede hidrojen s\u00fclf\u00fcr\u00fc yakal\u0131yor ve ertesi g\u00fcn \u00f6l\u00e7mek \u00fczere \u00e7\u00f6kt\u00fcr\u00fcyoruz.<\/p>\n<p>Alvin\u2019in dal\u0131\u015f\u0131 bitip y\u00fckselmeye ba\u015flad\u0131\u011f\u0131nda dal\u0131\u015f ekibinden bilimsel rapor g\u00f6nderiliyor. Raporda hangi majorun en g\u00fcvenilir \u00f6rneklemeyi yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131, hangisinin \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmad\u0131\u011f\u0131, hangisinin ka\u00e7 derece s\u0131cakl\u0131ktan \u00f6rnek al\u0131nd\u0131\u011f\u0131 gibi detaylar yer al\u0131yor. Seferin ba\u015f\u0131nda ate\u015flenemeyen major say\u0131s\u0131 1-2 tane olurken sefer ilerledik\u00e7e ve majorlar elimizden ge\u00e7ip biraz \u201c\u015fefkat\u201d g\u00f6r\u00fcnce hepsi t\u0131k\u0131r t\u0131k\u0131r \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmaya ba\u015flad\u0131. Alvin g\u00fcverteye gelip hangara al\u0131nd\u0131\u011f\u0131nda art\u0131k \u00f6rnekler al\u0131nabilir oluyor. Majorlar\u0131 al\u0131p \u00f6rnekleri laboratuvara getiriyorum. \u00d6rnekler, her gruptan \u00f6rnek almakla g\u00f6revli ki\u015filere veriliyor.
