This project proposes an interdisciplinary methodology to reconstruct ancient traffic intensity by combining rock mechanics, use-wear analysis, experimental archaeology, tribology, and agent-based modelling. Using case studies from Kerkenes (Iron Age Anatolia) and Ephesus (Hellenistic\u2013Roman Anatolia), the project investigates how patterns of abrasion can reveal the frequency, duration, and nature of past movement. In this context, the ancient city of Ephesus hosted approximately 2 million visitors last year (photo from Celsus Library).<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research question\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can traces or amounts of abrasion preserved on archaeological thresholds and paving stones be used to reconstruct the intensity, duration, and character of ancient pedestrian and vehicular traffic?<\/p>\n<p>Sub-questions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How does stone abrasion relate to the quantity and type of traffic passing over a surface?<\/li>\n<li>Can experimental and engineering methods provide reliable estimates of ancient movement intensity?<\/li>\n<li>How can archaeological, geological, and computational data be integrated to model traffic flows within ancient cities?<\/li>\n<li>Can such methods contribute to the protection and sustainable management of archaeological heritage sites exposed to modern visitor pressure?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"from-abraded-stones-to-movement-data\"><strong>From Abraded Stones to Movement Data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project investigates archaeological thresholds and paving stones from two contrasting case studies:<br \/>\n\u2022 Kerkenes \u2014 a short-lived Iron Age urban settlement.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ephesus \u2014 one of the largest cities of the ancient Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"the-research-workflow-consists-of-four-stages\"><strong>The research workflow consists of four stages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>1. Archaeological Context Analysis<\/u><br \/>\n\u2022 Integrating archaeological, environmental, and historical datasets.<br \/>\n<u>2. Material Characterisation<\/u><br \/>\n\u2022 Petrographic analysis of stone materials.<br \/>\n\u2022 Identification of quarry sources where necessary.<br \/>\n<u>3. Experimental Testing<\/u><br \/>\n\u2022 B\u00f6hme abrasion resistance testing.<br \/>\n\u2022 Schmidt hammer test.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements.<br \/>\n\u2022 Unit weight test.<br \/>\n\u2022 Experimental archaeology and use-wear replication studies.<br \/>\n<u>4. Modelling<\/u><br \/>\n\u2022 Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) simulations.<br \/>\n\u2022 Testing different ancient traffic scenarios.<br \/>\n\u2022 Estimating pedestrian and vehicle densities through time.<br \/>\nTogether, these methods will allow the project to quantify relationships between stone wear and urban movement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results and Conclusions \/ Expected Outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(To be updated as the project progresses)<\/p>\n<p>The project is expected to:<br \/>\n\u2022 Develop a replicable methodology for estimating ancient traffic intensity from stone wear.<br \/>\n\u2022 Produce quantitative models of movement in ancient cities.<br \/>\n\u2022 Improve understanding of urban organisation and public space use.<br \/>\n\u2022 Generate new datasets linking archaeological observations with engineering measurements.<br \/>\n\u2022 Provide practical tools for cultural heritage management and visitor impact assessment.<\/p>\n<p>The results will demonstrate how architectural stones can serve as long-term archives of human behaviour and urban activity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Testimony of Stones: A New Method in Ancient Traffic Analysis Ancient stone pavements and threshold stones preserve physical traces of movement accumulated over centuries.
