A gear train is called a\u00a0<strong><em><span style=\"color: #cc0000\">planetary gear train<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0if there are some gears whose axes are not fixed. The velocity ratio between the rotating links will be different than the gear ratio. They can produce large changes in speed using very few gears. They are used in differentials, computing devices, in automatic car transmission and in a variety of instruments where a high speed ratio between the input and output is required within a small space (i.e. in heavy duty tractors, hoists, screw drives etc) and\/or when a speed change without disengagement of the input and output (i.e. automatic gear boxes) is required.<\/p>\n<p>The simplest form of a planetary gear is as shown. The arm (link k ) can rotate about A<sub>0<\/sub>. Link j (which is called<strong>\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #cc0000\">sun<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #cc0000\"><em>gear<\/em><\/span><\/strong><em>,<\/em>\u00a0if external or<em>\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #cc0000\">ring<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #cc0000\"><strong>\u00a0<em>gear<\/em><\/strong><\/span><em>,<\/em>\u00a0if internal) is also connected to the fixed link by a revolute joint at Ao. Link i, which is called the<strong>\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #cc0000\">planet gear<\/span><\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em>\u00a0is connected to the arm at A by a revolute joint, and links i and j are gear paired. (In the schematic representation of planetary gear trains side view is usually preferred.)<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2206 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.metu.edu.tr\/eresmech\/files\/2022\/03\/img1-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"526\" height=\"241\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Planetary Gear Train<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Planetary gear trains are also called\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Epicyclic Gear Train&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0from the fact that a point on the planet will describe an algebraic curve which is an epicycloid or hypocycloid. This curve can be represented in parametric form as:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">x = a<sub>1<\/sub>cos\u03b8 + a<sub>2<\/sub>cos(R\u03b8)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">y = a<sub>1<\/sub>sin\u03b8 + a<sub>2<\/sub>sin(R\u03b8)<\/p>\n<p>or \u00a0in complex numbers:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">z = a<sub>1<\/sub>e<sup>i\u03b8<\/sup> + a<sub>2<\/sub>e<sup>iR\u03b8<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Where q is the variable parameter (usually the angle of rotation of the arm) a<sub>1<\/sub>, a<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0and R are constants (R is a function of the gear ratio, a<sub>1<\/sub>\u00a0and a<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0are the link lengths of the arm and the position of the point relative to the moving pivot of the planet respectively). Very interesting curves (epi- or hypocycloid curves) can be obtained. An example is given in\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">below<\/span>. One field of application of such motion is in mixers where the pedal or blade is moved on a cycloidal path.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1371\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.metu.edu.tr\/eresmech\/files\/2021\/09\/img2-18.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"438\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2207 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.metu.edu.tr\/eresmech\/files\/2022\/03\/6-2_clip_image006.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"165\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2208 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.metu.edu.tr\/eresmech\/files\/2022\/03\/6-2_clip_image008.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"165\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2209 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.metu.edu.tr\/eresmech\/files\/2022\/03\/6-2_clip_image010.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"163\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Curves traced by a point on the planet<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For large force transmission, there is usually more than one planet located symmetrically around the sun gear as shown in Fig.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">6<\/span>.13. Accurate clearance is required for the operation of such a gear train. The planetary gear train thus formed is over closed and thus there must be special dimensional requirements (such that all the planets being equal). In the kinematic analysis of planetary gear trains, one must consider only one planet..<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1372 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.metu.edu.tr\/eresmech\/files\/2021\/09\/img3-14.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"257\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1379 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.metu.edu.tr\/eresmech\/files\/2021\/09\/planetMultLast.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"249\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the motion analysis of planetary gear trains one can refer to the relative motion concept discussed in Chapter\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">3<\/span>. The motion of the planet can be considered as composed of two parts. One is the motion of the centre of the planet (point A) and the other is the rotation of the planet about the planet axis. Let us derive an equation that relates the angular speeds of the links and the gear ratio.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the simple planetary gear train as shown in Fig.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">6<\/span>.14. Point P is the point of contact of the gear teeth, and due to pure rolling between the mating gears the velocity of the coincident points Pi\u00a0and Pj are equal. Since the velocities considered are along the same direction (but, may be in opposite sense), the vector velocity equation can be treated as a scalar equation. For external gearing Rij= -Ti\/Tj \u00a0and for internal gearing Rij =+Ti\/Tj. If any two of the angular speeds are given, one can solve for the third speed.<\/p>\n<p>In simple gear trains the speed ratio,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\">w<\/span><sub>1j<\/sub>\/\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\">w<\/span><sub>1i<\/sub>, and the gear ratio, T<sub>i<\/sub>\/T<sub>j<\/sub>\u00a0were the same. The symbol R<sub>ij<\/sub>\u00a0was used to represent both of these ratios. In planetary gear trains these two ratios are not the same. Therefore, the symbol R<sub>ij<\/sub>\u00a0will be used as the gear ratio (or the speed ratio when the arm is considered fixed) and the symbol N<sub>ij<\/sub>\u00a0will be used as the speed ratio: N<sub>ij<\/sub>\u00a0=\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\">w<\/span><sub>1j<\/sub>\/\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Symbol\">w<\/span><sub>1i<\/sub>.\u00a0 For simple gear trains R<sub>ij<\/sub>= N<sub>ij<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<p>As a simple example, consider an epicyclic \u00a0gear train shown\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">below<\/span>. The sun gear has 60 teeth and the planet has 22 teeth. The arm rotates at 100 rpm counter clockwise and the sun gear rotates at 150 rpm clockwise. In such a case the above equations must be written for each simple planetary gear train. In Compound gear trains one must first identify gears that have a moving axis of rotation. These gears are the planet gears. Next, one must identify the links that are connected to the planet by a revolute joint. This link is the arm of the planet considered. Then for each arm found, the planetary gear relation must be written. Two examples are given below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2211 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.metu.edu.tr\/eresmech\/files\/2022\/03\/img7.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"217\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Determine the output speed and the direction of rotation when the input speed is 3000 rpm .<\/p>\n<p>Link 3 does not have a fixed axis of rotation. Therefore it is a planet. Link 2 is connected to link 3 by a revolute joint. Therefore it is the arm. Determine the output speed and state its relative direction of rotation with respect to the input link.<\/p>\n<p>In the first portion of the gear train (links 2, 3, 4 and 6) the gears have a fixed axis of rotation.
