1.2 Some Examples of Mechanisms from everyday life-IV:

Jacks

To lift heavy loads we use jacks. If we also want to move the load by some small distance we place it on a small cart. On the left, you see two different jacks. In cars you can find some other types as well.

Lift Platform

To reach high places and to do work such as the change of bulbls, repair work or laying out cables, a worker and all his equipment must be lifted to a certain height in a safe manner. The mechanism known as the “lazzy tongue” can be used. The input to the system is given by the hydraulic piston.

Hydraulic Press

To shape metals we need large forces. Hydraulic, mechanical or pneumatic presses are used. The mechanism shown has a high mechanical advantage.

Car Hood

In great many cars the motor or baggage hoods are connected to the body by simple hinges, In certain cases to permit easy access and due to the design of some other parts, a four or six link mechanism is used.

Dump Truck

Using Trucks you carry very heavy loads reaching 40-50 tons (such as rocks). Dumping the load is also a hard task. The mechanism shown is one of the posible solutions found.

Pump

Depending on the pressure, flow rate, viscocity, temperature of operation, etc. one type will be more suitable for a certain application. Mechanism shown on the left can be used as a positive displacement pump.

Axial Pump

The axial pump shown has found place in hydraulic drives extensively. If the angle between the input shaft (red) and the casing is made adjustable, the rate of flow can be adjusted (if the two are alligned, there will be no flow).
