What is Distance Education? Should you consider it?
Distance education is learning that occurs remotely. In the past, correspondence education was a more common method of distance education, where learners are sent materials (via mail, etc.) to study individually. Today, this typically happens through digital platforms. Distance education allows access to course materials and interaction with instructors without being physically present in a classroom.
As for whether you should consider it, it should be noted that distance education isn’t necessarily better or worse than traditional education. However, it does have its advantages in some areas and disadvantages in others. Here are some pros and cons for you to take note of.
Pros:
- Flexible timing and pacing
- No location constraints
- Quick access to a large variety of materials
- Can reduce cost and be more cost-effective while still delivering quality education
Cons:
- Social interaction can be less natural
- Students’ self motivation skills may not be at the sufficient level
- Limited physical and hands-on interaction
- Ensuring academic integrity can be harder
Regardless, the cons should really be seen as challenges unique to distance education that can be overcome with the right mindset. Because in today’s climate where time is really valuable, distance education comes as a crucial tool to consider for learners and educators alike.
