Serious Games

These are the objectives we have developed for our serious game course. This blog is dedicated to teach the design, development, and evaluation of serious games as effective instructional tools. Our posts aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how game mechanics, educational principles, and innovative strategies come together to enhance learning experiences.

1.Given a set of serious game scenarios, students will be able to identify and explain two primary game mechanics that support educational goals. Click here for module

2. Given a selection of serious games, students will evaluate the educational benefits, providing at least three specific examples. Click here for module

3. Using a framework for serious game design, students will create a basic design plan that incorporates essential principles to achieve a learning outcome. Click here for module 3

4. When presented with various serious game based assessments, students will analyze and critique the effectiveness of assessment methods used within the game environment. Click here for module 4

5. Using collaborative tools, students will work in teams to design a simple prototype of a serious game concept aimed at a university audience, incorporating at least three core learning mechanics discussed in class. Click here for module 5

6. When given access to a prototype of a serious game, students will conduct a usability analysis, documenting at least three areas of improvement related to user experience and accessibility. Click here for module 6

7. Using a provided design framework, students will outline a storyboard for a serious game, including key mechanics, objectives, and feedback loops that support a specific educational goal. Click here for module 7
